Dr. Gilbert Gonzales, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Health & Society, the Department of Health Policy, and the Program for Public Policy Studies at Vanderbilt University. He is also the Director of Public Policy Studies and Associate Director of the LGBTQ+ Policy Lab at Vanderbilt University.

Dr. Gonzales' research team investigates how public policies affect health outcomes, access to care, and health services utilization for LGBTQ+ populations in the United States.

LGBTQ+ Health & Policy Research

Dr. Gonzales' research includes more than 70 peer-reviewed studies in high-impact journals, including the American Journal of Public Health, JAMA, Pediatrics, Health Services Research, the New England Journal of Medicine, and The Milbank Quarterly.

His research has been covered by diverse news outlets such as CNN, Reuters, the New York Post, the Guardian, the Rush Limbuagh Show, and U.S. News and World Report.

In 2016, Professor Gonzales was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Research on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for his research on LGBTQ+ health at Vanderbilt University. 

Training the Next Generation of Health Services Researchers & Health Policy Practitioners

Professor Gonzales teaches courses on the U.S. health care system and public policy research methods for undergraduate students at Vanderbilt University. He also mentors undergraduate, graduate, and medical students/fellows interested in health policy and health equity research. 

In 2024, Professor Gonzales was awarded the Vanderbilt University Chancellor's Cup "for remarkable teaching and mentorship of undergraduate students."
